Xi Jinping Not To Attend The BRICS Summit In Brazil. PM Modi Invited To State Dinner There

Chinese President Xi Jinping will not attend the BRICS summit to be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil next week.

The South China Morning Post (SCMP) has quoted sources as saying that Jinping is upset over India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi being invited to the state dinner after the summit.

The 17th BRICS summit is going to be held in Brazil on 6-7 July. Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has invited PM Narendra Modi for the state dinner after the summit.

According to SCMP, Jinping feels that he will get less attention in front of Modi.

However, China has informed Brazil, the host of the BRICS summit, about President Xi Jinping's absence, citing his busy schedule.

There are also reports that Brazil is upset with this decision of the Chinese President about 10 days before the meeting.

This will be the first time in Xi Jinping's 12-year tenure as president that he will not attend the BRICS summit.

He has attended the summit every year since 2013. During the Covid pandemic, he attended BRICS virtually for two years.

According to SCMP, Prime Minister Li Qiang will now represent the country in place of Chinese President Xi Jinping at the BRICS Summit.

He also attended the G20 Summit in India in 2023 in place of Xi Jinping.

However, no official confirmation has been made by China yet. Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun told Brazilian newspaper Folha that information will be given at the right time.

Amid reports that Xi Jinping would not attend the summit, Brazil's Foreign Ministry said it would not comment on internal decisions of foreign delegations.

SCMP quoted Chinese officials as saying that Xi Jinping has already met Brazilian President Lula da Silva twice in less than a year. Therefore, he believes that his visit to the BRICS summit is not that important.

Jinping will meet the Brazilian president at the G20 summit in the South American country in November 2024 and again at the China-CELAC Forum in Beijing in May 2025.

BRICS is a group of five major emerging economies - Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. Its purpose is to promote economic, political and social cooperation among these countries.

Brazil, Russia, India and China founded BRICS in 2009. South Africa joined in 2010. Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Indonesia and the UAE have been added to the group as full members.

Belarus, Bolivia, Kazakhstan, Cuba, Malaysia, Nigeria, Thailand, Uganda and Uzbekistan have been added to BRICS as partner countries.

Last year, in the Russian city of Kazan, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping held bilateral talks after 5 years. Both leaders emphasized on resolving the border dispute as soon as possible and maintaining mutual cooperation and mutual trust.

This was the first bilateral meeting of the two leaders after the Galwan clash in 2020.

In the 50-minute conversation, PM Modi said, 'Maintaining peace and stability on the border should be our priority. Mutual trust, mutual respect and mutual sensitivity should remain the foundation of our relations.
