Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma made a sensational revelation in the Assembly on Tuesday, stating that the death of celebrated singer Zubeen Garg was “not an accident but a murder.” Responding to an adjournment motion moved by the Opposition on the opening day of the winter session, the Chief Minister said that the Special Investigation Team’s findings and available evidence clearly point towards a “clear-cut murder” rather than an accidental drowning, culpable homicide, or conspiracy.
Sarma disclosed that one of the accused directly committed the murder, while others supported and executed the crime. The SIT has so far arrested seven individuals, examined 252 witnesses, and seized 29 crucial items related to the investigation. According to the Chief Minister, murder charges have been registered against about four to five of the accused.
Zubeen, 52, died on September 19 in Singapore while swimming during his visit to attend the North East India Festival (NEIF), raising immediate public suspicion. In the weeks following his death, more than 60 complaints were filed across Assam demanding a thorough probe.
Among those arrested are NEIF event organiser Shyamkanu Mahant, Zubeen’s cousin and police officer Sandipan Garg, manager Siddharth Sharma, band members Shekhar Jyoti Goswami and Amritprabha Mahant, and personal security officers Nandeshwar Bora and Prabin Baishya. The latter two were arrested after investigators found suspicious financial transactions amounting to over ₹11 million in their bank accounts. All accused are now in judicial custody.
Zubeen Garg, born on November 18, 1972, in Tinsukia, was among Assam’s most versatile and highest-paid musicians. His career spanned over 38,000 recorded songs in 40 languages and dialects, making him one of the most prolific singers in Indian music history. His death has triggered widespread public emotion and political shockwaves, and the Assembly is expected to witness further debate as the investigation progresses.
