Zubeen Garg Case Sparks Violent Protests in Assam

Massive unrest broke out in Assam’s Baksa district on Wednesday evening when the five accused in the Zubeen Garg death case were brought to the Baksa District Jail under tight police security. Within minutes of the news spreading, hundreds of enraged fans and local residents gathered outside the jail premises, demanding justice and the public appearance of the accused.

The situation quickly spiraled out of control. Protesters set seven vehicles, including two police vans, ablaze and hurled stones at security forces, injuring several people — including a female police officer. In retaliation, police resorted to lathi-charge to disperse the mob. Several protesters were detained for unlawful assembly and destruction of public property.

District Magistrate Gautam Das immediately imposed Section 144 around the jail premises, banning any form of rallies, demonstrations, or processions within a 500-meter radius. The order also prohibited carrying weapons, inflammable materials, stones, or firecrackers, warning that any violation would invite strict legal action.

Earlier in the day, the CJM Court of Kamrup had ordered judicial custody for 14 days for all five accused, directing police not to house them in Guwahati Central Jail for security reasons. The accused were subsequently shifted to Baksa Jail, a move that triggered widespread outrage among Zubeen’s supporters.

The district remains tense as security forces patrol the area to prevent further violence. Authorities have appealed for calm, urging the public not to take the law into their own hands.
