Thousands of students staged a massive protest march in Manipur’s Churachandpur district on Wednesday, opposing any move to form a popular government in the state and demanding a “political solution” for the Kuki-Zo community.
The rally, organised by the Joint Students of Churachandpur, began from Lamka Public Ground at the district headquarters and concluded at Tuibong after covering nearly two kilometres. Protesters raised slogans such as “Political solution, not popular government” and carried placards reading “No solution, no rest.”
Student leaders later submitted a memorandum addressed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi through the Additional Deputy Commissioner. The representation urged the Centre to ensure a political solution for the Kuki-Zo community before any installation of a popular government in Manipur.
The memorandum highlighted what it described as “widespread displacement and breakdown of administration” in the state. It stated that thousands of people continue to live in relief camps and are still unable to return to their homes.
Manipur has remained under President’s Rule after Chief Minister N Biren Singh resigned last year. Although the state assembly’s tenure runs until 2027, it has been kept under suspended animation.
Since May 2023, ethnic violence between Meitei and Kuki-Zo groups has claimed over 260 lives and rendered thousands homeless, making it one of the most prolonged internal crises in the state’s recent history.
